In this article we’ll be looking at the various types of CBD delivery methods, what affects the amount of CBD we receive, and how quickly you should feel an effect. We will also explore what results you can expect over time.

What effects the amount of CBD I actually receive?

The amount of CBD you absorb is defined as the bioavailability of CBD, so the availability of it in your body after taking a dose.

Bioavailability

The form of CBD (cream, oil, edible) or how you take it (under the tongue, vape, etc..) determines how much of it will make it into your system. We’ll be looking at these in more detail below.

Another important factor is your pharmacokinetic profile. What does this mean?

In our context it is basically how your body affects the CBD you take; this could impact the benefit you get from the CBD, the size of dose you need, or any side effects the CBD could produce.

Each person’s body functions differently and will absorb and process CBD differently. It’s therefore very hard to predict the effects which are why you should always monitor how you feel when taking CBD (link to article).

Does the way in which we take CBD matter?

As we have seen in previous articles, there are various ways to take CBD and the method you choose will affect how quickly you feel the effect of CBD. Let’s look at various types of CBD and how to take it

CBD oil

Oils and Tinctures

CBD is easy to mix into liquids, oils, or fats which is one of the reasons we often see it offered with an oil base. Research by the School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, UK shows that CBD oil taken under the tongue should produce effects within 1 to 4 hours (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7558665/)

CBD Pills and Capsules

Pills and Capsules

This refers to any products that you swallow or eat which then go through your body’s digestive system. The fact that the product has to pass through your digestive system will slow down, and possibly reduce, the effect you will feel. CBD taken through this route can take a significant amount of time to pass into your system.

CBD Vaping

Vaping

Firstly – caution. Be aware that there is now research linking vaping with lung damage, https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/severe-lung-disease.html.

Vaping introduces the CBD into your body quickly and you should feel an effect within 5 minutes

CBD Creams and Lotions

Creams and Lotions

This is a popular and quick way to apply CBD to a specific body area. The amount of CBD absorbed is far less than other ways of taking it. This is because the product has to pass through the various layers that make up our skin which has a diluting effect on its final strength

Results over time

Although some people will feel the effects more quickly than others it is reasonable to allow a few days for CBD to take effect.

Try to think about why you are taking the product and monitor whether there is any difference in how you feel.

Bear in mind that It can take more time for the CBD to build up in your body so don’t be frustrated if there is no immediate change in how you feel.

Once you have been taking the product for an extended period, say 5 weeks or more, the benefit should be more visible.

If you’re still unsure of what has changed then it can be helpful to lower or pause your dosage and again monitor how you feel.

About michael

I’ve been fascinated by alternative health products for over five years now. My mother was a practicing homeopath and introduced me to plant-based solutions for a range of ailments, and I remember being genuinely impressed by remedies such as Arnica, Calendula, Nux Vomica and others.

I enjoy reading medical research on the use of CBD and trying to produce more easily accessible summaries. The production methods used in the industry are also fascinating, as well as the people who have created their brands and companies – there are honestly amazing and inspiring personal stories behind each of them. I hope our site helps you to understand what CBD could do for you and how select the best products for your needs.
